Altshuler, Berzon, Nussbaum, Rubin & Demain is a small San Francisco litigation firm that specializes in labor and employment, environmental, constitutional, campaign and election, and civil rights law. Although most of their cases are in federal and state courts in California, they appear regularly in courts throughout the country and before the National Labor Relations Board.

  • Peter D. Nussbaum (Lead Attorney)

Peter Nussbaum is a graduate of Cornell University and Harvard Law School, where he was Articles Editor of the Harvard Law Review. After law school, he served as law clerk to Judge Irving R. Kaufman of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and was then a Fulbright Scholar at the London School of Economics. Prior to entering private practice in 1974, he worked for various legal services programs, including the Center for Social Welfare, Policy and Law at Columbia University Law School. He has served as a lawyer representative and Executive Committee Member of the Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference and is a member of the ABA Committee on Practice and Procedure under the National Labor Relations Act. He has served as chair of the Democratic Party of Contra Costa County and as a member of the Democratic Party’s State Executive Committee. He also lectures frequently on labor topics, including to the ABA.

  • Daniel T. Purtell (Co-counsel)

Daniel T. Purtell is a partner at Altshuler Berzon LLP. He is a graduate of Stanford University and Stanford Law School. He served as a law clerk to Judge Harry Pregerson of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. He is a contributing editor of The Developing Labor Law, and was a member of the Editorial Board of Bender’s California Labor & Employment Bulletin from 2002 to 2005. He also lectures frequently on issues of labor and employment law, particularly regarding ethical issues that arise in representing individuals and labor unions.

  • Linda Lye (Co-counsel)

Linda Lye is a partner at Altshuler Berzon LLP. She is a graduate of Yale University and the UC Berkeley School of Law, where she was a member of the California Law Review and the Berkeley Journal of Employment and Labor Law. She served as a law clerk to Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg of the United States Supreme Court and Judge Guido Calabresi of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. She chairs the Legal Committee of the ACLU of Northern California, and is a member of its Board of Directors, Executive Committee, and Finance Committee. Ms. Lye also serves on the the Board of Directors of the AFL-CIO Lawyers’ Coordinating Committee. She previously served as Co-President of the Berkeley Law Foundation, a public interest law foundation that raises seed money for legal services projects, and as a member of the ABA Section of Labor and Employment Law, National Programs Committee.
