PERFORMANCE EVALUATIONS: Things you need to know
A performance evaluation is given once a year.
In addition, an evaluation is given anytime there is a change in your Staff Nurse classification, i.e., promotion.
Promotion is based on your ability to perform the clinical competencies related to the Staff Nurse Level you are seeking plus completion of the number of required Staff Nurse Criteria activities.
You can have two (2) interim evaluations in one year.
Evaluations for new hires: A. Informal interim evaluation after 3 months B. Evaluation after your trial period of 6 months
MANAGER’S ROLE
Nurses will be advised by their manager 30 days before the evaluation is due.
If the manager is not an RN, clinical skills of the nurse will be assessed by an RN.
Performance problems will be identified with the nurse prior to documentation in the evaluation.
NURSE’S ROLE
The nurse will schedule an appointment with the manager 15 days prior to the review date to discuss her performance.
The nurse will provide documentation 7 days prior to the appointment on how she has met or exceeded the Staff Nurse Criteria or to explain any failures in meeting the Criteria.
Ask for a copy of your evaluation at the time of the meeting.
If you have questions about your evaluation, call or email CRONA immediately.
THE EVALUATION
On the review date the manager will give the nurse an evaluation.
If peer evaluation is requested the manager will gather them unless the nurse and manager agree otherwise.
The nurse will be allowed to see peer evaluations in their original forms.
Comments from non-RN’s will be limited to interpersonal skills and/or leadership abilities in the work environment.
AFTER THE EVALUATION
Any pay action will be implemented for the pay period following completion of the evaluation and effective as of the review date.
CHECK YOUR PAY STUB
Review your pay check carefully for general inaccuracies including:
pay raise, shift differential and PTO/ATO.
