Area Representatives and Membership Meetings
June 3, and 5, 2008

Overtime: In a Nutshell

Overtime in General:
A Staff Nurse who is regularly assigned to work 8 hour shifts gets paid:

  1. Time and one half (1 ½x) if she/he works over 8 hours
  2. Double time (2x) if she/he works over 12 hours
  3. Time and one half (1 ½ x) for hours worked in excess of 80 hours in 2 weeks

A Staff Nurse who is regularly assigned to work 10 hour shifts gets paid:

  1. Time and one half (1 ½ x) if she/he works over 10 hours
  2. Double time (2x) if she/he works over 12 hours

A Staff Nurse who is regularly assigned to work 12 hour shifts gets paid:

  1. Double time (2x) if she/he works over 12 hours
  2. Time and one half (1 1/2x) for hours worked in excess of 40 hours in a week

A Staff Nurse who takes voluntary Absent Time or is mandatorily cancelled at the beginning of her/his shift and stays over after her/his scheduled shift will not get paid overtime or double time unless she/he actually works over 8 or 12 hours. However, a nurse will be paid overtime if she/he leaves the unit and is called back on short notice to work over her scheduled shift.

A Staff Nurse who works part of a shift over commitment or picks up part of a shift for another nurse and stays over after the scheduled shift will not get paid overtime unless she/he leaves the unit and is called back on short notice.

Double-Back Premium:
A Staff Nurse scheduled to work within 8 hours after the end of a scheduled shift gets:

  1. OT for the second shift
  2. Not paid overtime if she/he requested this schedule

Short Notice Call (SNC)/Emergency Call Back (ECB)
A nurse may be requested on short notice to report to work.
The following generally applies with a few exceptions:

For 8 hour shift Nurses:
SNC/ECB prior to the start of the shift is paid 1½x for all early hours worked.
Once your scheduled shift begins you earn your regular hourly rate (this is the start of your 24-hour clock).

For 12 hour shift Nurses: SNC/ECB prior to the start of the shift is paid 2x for all early hours worked. Once your scheduled shift begins you earn your regular hourly rate (this is the start of your 24-hour clock).

Holiday:
A Staff Nurse who works SNC/ECB on a holiday is paid overtime (1 1/2x).

Payment of Overtime/Double Time
We encourage nurses to inform the Resource Nurse as early as possible if they need to stay over in order to complete their duties. This will help enable the Resource Nurse to provide available help in order to avoid overtime pay. However, any overtime hours charged in good faith will be paid regardless of whether the Resource Nurse was notified.

If you have any questions about overtime and/or double time pay, call the CRONA office or email crona@crona.org.

Sunny Balson, Secretary
On behalf of the CRONA Executive Board
