Dress Code
Dear CRONA Nurses,
This is to inform you that the Ambulatory Care Services at SHC (Clinics, Hoover, SMOC, Cancer Center, etc.) have decided to unilaterally implement a dress code policy. The hospital is claiming that according to the SHC CRONA contract all the hospital needs to do is inform CRONA 45 calendar days in advance of implementation.
CRONA disagrees with the hospital’s interpretation of the contract. We have sent a letter to the hospital informing them that a dress code is a mandatory subject of bargaining. The hospital cannot unilaterally implement a policy that is a mandatory bargaining subject without a clear and unmistakable waiver by CRONA, and CRONA made no such waiver.
CRONA has also met with the hospital. We presented areas of concerns such as limiting shoes to black or white tennis shoes, no prints, only matching solid colors, no fleece jackets including fleece jackets with Stanford logo unless approved by Ambulatory Care, etc.
We do not disagree with the hospital’s goal of creating a more professional environment in the Clinics for our patients, staff and Faculty. However, the hospital cannot unilaterally implement a dress code policy without bargaining with CRONA , and we want to negotiate a policy that takes nurses’ interests into account.
We will continue our discussions with the hospital and let you know the outcome. In the meantime, if you are required to follow the dress code, you should comply. You also need to contact CRONA immediately so we can follow up accordingly, including by filing an unfair labor practice charge, if necessary.
Sincerely,
Lorie Johnson
President
On Behalf of the CRONA Executive Board
